I took his hand and followed...

My mother-in-law recently gave me a framed poem that makes me tear up everytime I read it. It is geared towards mommys with little boys, love it! I wanted to share it:

I took his hand and followed

My dishes went unwashed today
I didn't make the bed,
I took his hand and followed
where his eager footsteps led.
oh yes we went adventuring,
my little son and I,
exploring all the great outdoors
beneath the summer sky.
we waded in a crystal stream,
we wandered through a wood;
my kitchen wasn't swept today
but life was gay and good.
we found a cool, sun-dappled glade
and now my small son knows
how mother bunny hides her nest,
where jack-in-the-pulpit grows.
We watched a robin feed her young,
we climbed a sunlit hill,
saw cloud-sheep scamper through the sky,
we plucked a daffodil.
that my house was neglected,
that I didn't brush the stairs,
in twenty years, no one on earth
will know or even care.
but that I've helped my little boy
to noble manhood grow,
in twenty years, the whole wide world
may look and see and know.
This is so true and powerful! I hung this framed poem on the wall near the laundry room and kitchen with a framed photo of my little man above it. It serves as a reminder to me everytime I start to feel overwhelmed by neglected housework, that if I spent that time with my little boy instead then it was a day worth spent! He's only little once so I am going to try and spend every waking minute playing/exploring/adventuring/teaching/learning etc. with him that I possibly can!! housework will just have to wait....until naptime or bedtime;)
hope you mommys of little boys out there enjoyed this as much as I do! Thanks grammy!! Hope all have a great weekend!!
love and blessings,
traci

  1. I try to explain this to David how I feel responsible and love what being a mom means. I love that you shared this. I think I might type it up and hang it up too. I never cease those mom moments. Have a blessed weekend!

  2. So happy you liked it! Maybe it was because Mom wasn't a great housekeeper herself, but she stressed to all of us with kids that housework could wait. Now that the guys are 27 and 29 I still can't get out of this mode. Love the new look of your blog, too!
